The best way to get the exact engagement thing you want is to design it yourself. Many jewelry stores and retailers have a design-your-own program and will work with you to ensure you get a ring that is perfectly, wonderfully your own. These programs can be excellent, but there are still a few dos and don'ts you'll want to keep in mind when designing your engagement ring.

Do: Set your budget up-front

It's so easy to start with a design that's within your budget. Then you add some engraving, change the gem shape, or make some other changes, and before you know it, the ring costs thousands more than you planned on spending. Going over budget is not inevitable, though. Let your jewelry vendor know what your top budget is from the start, and ask them to help you design a ring that fits into that budget. This way, they probably won't even show you options you can't afford, so you won't have to feel bad saying no.

Don't: Pick anything too trendy

Remember, this is a ring you will be wearing for decades. You don't want to choose a design that is in line with today's short-lived trends but will look silly in a few years. Instead, aim for a classic, long-lasting look. You can't go wrong with classic gems and simple metals, like sterling silver and yellow gold. Put your own spin on things, of course, but always ask yourself If you'll like it in 10 years.

Do: Consider comfort

The main goal of designing an engagement ring is to make one that looks amazing and matches your personal style. But you need to consider comfort, too. If you have really thin fingers, for example, you want to choose a thinner band that won't interfere with you bending your finger. If you have a job that requires you to use your hands, then you may want smaller gems with a less-rough finish.

Don't: Feel like you have to customize every option

Just because you can customize every part of the ring does not mean you have to! If you like a certain band as-is, you don't have to modify it. If you like a certain gem, you can ask for it as-is. Sometimes people get so wrapped up in customizing and making changes that they change aspects of the ring that were already suitable.
